Jambomochi : It was named with a sarcasm after the lower-level Samurai leke the Goushi who was 25% of population.

Jambomochi 【The word "Jambo" isn't like a Japanese word.】
The word "Jambo" is like a English word, and isn't like a Japanese word. But it is a real Japanese word. which is a kind of Kagoshima dialect. It means two sticks. I think this expression came from Chinese. Because on Chinese "Liang" means "two". Both of Japanese "Ryou(Kagoshima dialect:Jambo)" and Chinese "Liang" use same character.
Jambomochi is just like a plank of Mitarashi dumpling. It isn't so big. Its feature is two toothpicks or chopsticks stuck in the Jambomochi. What do their toothpicks express?
Jambo of Kagoshima dialect express the Samurai. Generally the Samurai had two Japanese sword on thier belt. But there ware many poor Samurai called "Goushi" who couldn't buy two sword in Kagoshima which name was the Satsuma clan those days. They had only one sword, so people called them "two sticks = two sword" with sarcasm. 25% of population was Samurai in Satsuma. Many Samurai couldn't serve at the Castle naturally. Almost of them sometimes asked permission to work for agriculture or industry. And the Jambomochi have to have two toothpicks.
There ware many shop which sell the Jambomochi here and there. But it is sold only in the Isoteien park or around there now.

We introduce how to make simply.

(1) Knead Jyoshinko with water and boil.
   * Jyoshinko=top-grade rice flour made from non-glutinous rice (2) Brown a little on the face.
(3) Stab two toothpicks on the side. And spread the sweet soy sauce.

There are some variation by each cook. Sometimes they use rice cake instead of Jyoshinko. We mix 2 kinds of powder.
